Calico Pearlscales: The Quest For Blue

When it comes to the world of goldfish enthusiasts, the pursuit of unique and vibrant colours is an ongoing passion. While the majority of Calico Pearlscale Goldfish boast the traditional red and white nacreous scales, the quest for blue and black specimens has proven to be a challenging venture. In this blog post, we look at the intricacies of cultivating Calico Pearlscales with blue hues and explore the scarcity of these elusive colours.

In the realm of goldfish colouration, blue specimens are notably sought after, making them highly coveted. The rarity of these hues has led to various theories attempting to explain the challenges in developing goldfish with such distinctive colours. The placement of blue on goldfish is unique, with the colour originating on the skin level and then refracted through the scales to create the mesmerising blue tint.

The Unique Challenge with Pearlscales:

Pearlscales, characterised by the presence of calcium deposits in their scales, pose a unique challenge in achieving blue coloration. Unlike other goldfish scales that are relatively thin, Pearlscales exhibit thicker scales due to the calcium deposits. This thickness complicates the process of light refraction, making it more challenging for the blue colour to be expressed, especially as the fish age and the scales become thicker.

The pictures show young Pearlscales exhibiting blue colouring. Unlike other Goldfish, the blue is highly distorted by the scales.

While the task of creating Pearlscales with substantial blue colouring may seem daunting, there is evidence that it is possible. Despite the inherent difficulty, some Pearlscale specimens have exhibited both black and blue colorations in Japan, showcasing the potential for success in this endeavour.

Recognizing that the likelihood of success may be relatively low, our strategy may have to involve selecting Pearlscales with less developed scales, as a trade for colouration. By focusing on specimens with slightly thinner scales, we could increase the chances of achieving the vibrant blue coloration that has long eluded Pearlscale enthusiasts.

Despite the complexities of scale thickness and light refraction, the pursuit of the elusive blue in Pearlscales is a testament to the unwavering passion and dedication within the goldfish community.
